When to Go: Sea Temperatures at Nude Beaches by Month

By Reto Pascal Wyss, NudistMap · Updated

Most swimmers find the sea comfortable at 21 °C or warmer, which in the Mediterranean means late June to early October. The Canary Islands stay around 18–23 °C all year and are Europe's main winter destination for naturists.

How warm should the sea be for swimming?

As a rule of thumb, 18 °C feels bracing, 21 °C is comfortable for most swimmers and 24 °C or more feels warm.

Each beach page shows the long-term average sea surface temperature for every month (NOAA OISST, 1991–2020) and the air temperature (NASA POWER, 2001–2025). Water at the shore can be a little warmer in shallow bays and colder where rivers flow in.

When is the best time to visit nude beaches in each region?

  • Mediterranean (Spain, France, Croatia, Greece): sea above 21 °C from about late June to early October, warmest in August.
  • Canary Islands: around 18–23 °C all year, which makes them the main winter naturist destination in Europe.
  • Baltic and North Sea (Germany, Netherlands, Denmark): short season, July and August, often below 20 °C.
  • Florida, the Caribbean and Mexico: warm all year. Summer brings heat and storms, so many prefer November to April.
  • California and the Pacific Northwest: cold water all year (12–18 °C), but sunny beach days from June to October.

Where can naturists go in winter?

When the beaches get cold, naturist saunas and hot springs take over. In German-speaking countries most public saunas are textile-free all year.
