Nude Beach Etiquette: 12 Rules Every Visitor Should Know

By Reto Pascal Wyss, NudistMap · Updated

The most important nude beach rule is never to photograph other people; the second is not to stare. Beyond that, sit on a towel, stay inside the clothing-optional zone and keep behaviour family-friendly.

What are the rules at a nude beach?

Naturist etiquette is mostly common courtesy. These rules apply on almost every clothing-optional beach in the world, and at clothing-optional hot springs too:

  • Never take photos or video of other people. Point your camera at the sea, and ask before anyone appears in the frame.
  • Don't stare. A glance is human; watching is not.
  • Sit on a towel, especially on shared seating, boats and in saunas.
  • Stay in the clothing-optional zone. Many beaches have signs marking where it starts and ends.
  • Keep your distance. Don't set up right next to strangers when there's space.
  • Behaviour stays family-friendly. Sexual behaviour gets people banned and puts the beach's status at risk.
  • Wear sunscreen on every part of you that rarely sees the sun.
  • Pack out everything you bring in.
  • Respect people who keep their swimsuits on. Clothing optional means optional.
  • Dress before you walk through textile areas, parking lots or cafés.
  • If someone makes you uncomfortable, tell a lifeguard or ranger, and note it in a check-in so others know.
  • Be friendly. Regulars are usually happy to explain the local customs.

Why does nude beach etiquette matter?

Many nude beaches exist only by local tolerance. Complaints about photography or lewd behaviour are the most common reason a beach loses its clothing-optional status. Good etiquette keeps these places open.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take photos at a nude beach?

Only of the landscape, and only when no one else is in the frame. Photographing people without their consent is the fastest way to be asked to leave, and in many countries it is illegal.

Do I have to be fully nude at a clothing-optional beach?

No. Clothing optional means you choose. Many first-time visitors keep a swimsuit on at first, and that is accepted.

Can couples and single men go to nude beaches?

Public nude beaches are open to everyone. Some private naturist clubs and resorts limit single visitors, so check their rules before you book.

What should I do if someone breaks the rules?

Move away if you can, and tell a lifeguard, ranger or staff member. Report persistent problems to the land manager so the beach keeps its status.
