National federation
Deutscher Verband für Freikörperkultur
The Deutscher Verband für Freikörperkultur (DFK) is Germany's national naturist federation, founded in 1949 and the German member of the International Naturist Federation. It represents the clubs behind the FKK tradition, the oldest organised naturist movement in the world, and is affiliated with the German Olympic Sports Confederation as a sports body.
What does the DFK do?
Most members belong to local FKK clubs with their own grounds: sports fields, lakeside meadows, saunas and campsites. The DFK coordinates these clubs, runs naturist sports championships, issues the INF card for Germany and publishes advice for newcomers.
It also speaks for naturism in public debate, for example when cities review FKK areas in parks or at lakes. The FKK guide explains the German tradition and the words you will see on signs.
Where is FKK practised in Germany?
On the Baltic and North Sea coasts (Sylt, Rügen, Usedom), at hundreds of lakes, in naturist campgrounds and above all in saunas and thermal baths, where going without a swimsuit is the norm rather than the exception.
Frequently asked questions
What does FKK mean?
Freikörperkultur, "free body culture": the German word for naturism. An FKK-Strand is a nude beach and an FKK-Gelände a club's grounds. See what FKK means.
Do German saunas require nudity?
Almost all public saunas in Germany are textile-free: swimwear is not allowed in the sauna cabins for hygiene reasons. Towels are required to sit on.
Is the DFK a sports federation?
Yes. The DFK is recognised as a sports association and its clubs compete in naturist sports such as swimming, volleyball and pétanque.
